I ended up getting an old gas welder from a friend, the tanks are empty, how much will it roughly be to have them refilled, I actually may get an extra set, how much might that run? I am just gonna use it for light work around the farm. It's a small portable outfit.

Here in Missouri,I deal with Linweld, theyre the best gas company around ,They don't care about ownership papers ,you just tell them that you own it and you're ready to go.all prices are exchange. It cost's 22$ to fill the 3 foot tall acetylene and 9$ to fill the Oxeygen.I use mainly propane and oxygen,5$ for gas I can use on my grill tooand 12$ to fill the 5 foot tall oxygen.

Remember to allow your acetyline tank to sit upright for 1/2 hour or so if you lay it down say when you are getting it filled. Contains porous rock of some sort that holds the gas itself and it has to settle before use.

CJ gives good advice. Acetylene is an unstable gas, and you can't just fill an empty tank with it. Acetylene tanks have a porous filler which absorbs a certain quantity of acetone which in turn absorbs the Acetylene gas. If the gas becomes unstable in some of the pores of the filler, it absorbs the reaction before it spreads, basically stabilizing the gas. Free Acetylene can't be pressurized above 15psi if memory serves, but with the special Acetylene tanks, the pressure can be increased a lot.

Hi Bandit,

I haven't bought oxy/act in a few years. Depending on your state you can buy or rent cylinders. Cost varries alot. I would take a trip to your local gas supplier and see what size cylinders you want to handle as they can get heavy for the larger cylinders. I would not get the really small oxy/act cylinders tho as you will smoke right thru the gasses and there expensive to fill for quanity of gas you get.

I agree totally with T-Bone. Don't get the real small tanks. They cost only a couple of bucks less to fill than the next size bigger tank (I believe that size is referred to as an "S" tank). The "S" tank has at least 4 or 5 times as much oxygen as the little tank.

Bandit -
In my area (N. FL) the cost is neglible. Oxy is $20 for customer owned cylinder and $18 for acetylene. Oxy tank is bigger than acty. tank. These are typical tanks you see in the back of rigs, not the mini hand-held units.

MAKE SURE THE TANKS ARE CUSTOMER OWNED & WHEN YOU GET THEM FILLED GET CUSTOMER OWNED TANKS BACK!!!

I recently went in for a refill on my tanks and got SURPRISED!! On my previous refill I failed to ensure customer owned tanks were returned to me. That said I now have an AIR-LIQUIDE Oxy cylinder I cannot get refilled by my HOLOX supplier (gas industry beauracracy). To further complicate the issue AIR-LIQUIDE is no longer in the tank gas business but only BULK GAS.

The new company "WELD-IT" has no record of my previous refill and I am stuck with certified cylinder I cannot get refilled. New customer owned cylinder from HOLOX is ~$200 which I don't want to pay for but may have to due to the need for gas.

VERY good advice from ShepFL..... This is for shep....Go back to the company that gave you the wrong cylinder.....maybe they still have an older employee with enough "clout"to help you out...take your papers with you... Ask them what you need to do to get this straightend out.....Do the same thing where you are going to get them filled now.... VERY important--be calm and polite.Explain your situation. You can't afford to pay out another $200 ,for the suppliers mistake....the person that gave you the wrong cyl. knew it at the time.He was probably loosing his job and didn't care...don't give up, if you have to, ask for the next higher person in charge ...call or write a letter to the company sales or custmer service dept. at the main office.... DO IT..... . good luck
