i have an older model warn winch, 8000 lbs capacity.i plan to use it for loading things on my trailer. it has a motor that looks like a truck starter motor with a single stud coming out of it.i was wondering if this motor reverses or if the gearbox is just supposed to disengage under load. it is missing the brakeband in the drum on the end of the gearbox. does anyone have any exploded views for any of the older warn winches, it is older than anything warn has on their website.

All the Warn winches I've seen are electrically reversible using a solenoid. Some of them have a mechanical clutch/brake, but reversing is usually done electrically. If you're going to load equipment, you might want to think about using a snatch block (pulley with a hook) to improve your pulling power and put a lighter load on the winch.

Mark, I probably won't be of much help. I've had a few of the 8000lb warn winches. All mine reversed, be it by the motor or the gearbox, I don't remember. If I had one now, I'd check for you. I've got a Ramsey 12,000lb. The motor on it has 3 posts, but it needs work, solenoid I think?

Hi Mark,

I am not familiar with your winch, but whether or not the motor is reversible depends on how the motor is wound. If it really is a starter motor, it will run the same direction regardless of the polarity of the supply, and cannot be reversed. Good luck...Al English
