I have an old 4" Babco cast iron vise which has been with me for about 15 yrs.The other day while abusing the lil feller 1 more time, the "tongue" to the center of the baseplate busted off.Clean break inboard the ring, centerhole and pivot grooves not involved....Weldable??,best way??.Not welder myself, but have friends proficient in TIG,MIG,ARC and gas.though they think me a bit frugal so would like to be "armed"knowledgewise when asking for help on a cheap vise...THX

Hi Joe,

As was said by others, I wouldn't bother trying to repair it. Although more expensive, a steel, or at least malleable iron replacement vise would be tougher than a grey iron one. Good luck...Al English

leave the nickel wire in the box, thick sections of cast do not lend themselves to arc weld. the nickel contracts at a much greater rate than the cast iron , therefore the weld tries to pull away from the base metal.get some acetylene cast iron and a can of flux , that way you are welding with a comparable material and the rate of expansion is the same.

the cast rod and flux are made by harris , airco rod has been bought by lincoln and they no longer supply it . It is the best process for welding cast, once you master it , you will never go back to arc with nickel.

To weld cast iron, you have to preheat and post heat after the weld, use nickel rod on a stick welder. Personally, I'd run down to Sam's club and get a new one for $40, but that's me. Good luck!

Joe: I had a 3" reed vice I "Loved" abused it and broke the jaw clean off. I brazed this and it has been OK since. But ya gotta know its limits. I do have an identical one that I dont abuse. Had to use a big tip and plenty of heat. Grind it out plenty if you have the room.

cheapest way is to delete the baseplate entirely...use the swivel lock hole(s)to hold down directly...if only 1 hole drill another 1 on other side & thru bolt to workbench...figure out which angle it's most used at & fasten down like that...i have been accused of being cheap myself:^)...
