Need to weld some cast iron to steel. What kind of rod should I use with an AC arc welder?

Is this cast iron and steel material going to be an item that is heated , example exhaust manifold or fire place? Do you have an oxygen / acetylene torch set up? The reason for my questions is because cast iron is a very difficult metal to weld on with an arc welder and not have the weld crack right along the edge.Ideally you need a furnace to heat the entire peice. If the joint isn t heated when in service I prefer to braze weld cast iron to cast iron or cast iron to steel joints using bronze filler metal.

Steve from US Alloys told me how to weld cold, the secret is to use short beads and keeping the temp under 300 degrees. If no cracks are to be welded and steel is joined the temp may not be critical however Steve from US alloys is the perfect person to talk to. Also check www.twoguysgarage.com, in their archives is cold welding of cast iron, I saw the show and it was impessive.

Go to the US Alloys[use google], click cast iron and look up their 924 rod it's made for joining cast and steel. Not cheap but it works.
