I have cleaned up the pump, it is a Monarch brand, Dyna Pump, Mod M-801, G 05 M. Again it is powered by a Prestolite M-4001 12v motor. Assuming the last means 5 gpm pump rate, how big of a ram will this unit power? The Ram on my press is 12 ton. How does gpm correlate to tonnage or does it? I just wanna know before I fabricate this pump hanging on my press frame and find out it is too weak. Thanks.

You can figure the tonnage produced by multiplying pi/r2 x the psi of the pump (acually the pump relief valve setting). A 3 inch cylinder would be a 1.5 inch radius so 1.5 x 1.5 =2.25 x pi(3.14)=7.065 x say, 2500psi = 17662 pounds of force divided by 2000 = 8.83 tons of cylinder force. You can figure ram speed also, using the volume of the cylinder. (231 cu. in = 1 gallon) divided by the gal per minute of your pump and factoring in the length of stroke.

gallons per minute will have a speed effect. where as preasure sets tonnage. say for instance your ram is 12 tons at 10,000 psi and your pump is only capable of producing 5,000 psi you will have a 6 ton press. but you don't want to go the the other way and exert more preasure than your ram is spec'd at either. you could get very hurt.
