I'm gonna buy a weed wacker thiis week. I am looking in the 250 - 300$ range. I was told a Stihl FS80 is a good choice at $259.00.I will primarily be just wacking grass, although pretty high in some spots at my home. Are the attachments worth while? Any suggestions would help. Stihl, Husky,Echo are avail. locally. Thanks Steve

I have the FS85 and wouldn't trade for anything - it always starts right up!

I picked up a Stihl FS85 and I guess an FS120, with piles of attachments at an auction a few years ago. Love em! I don't use the 120 much because it is so much machine. The 80/85 does just fine.

I've got the shoulder harness and double handled cross bar. I like that far more then just hand holding the unit. With it balanced as the instructions describe, it's very easy to control, even when walking along the creeks and such.

I've been using the plastic cutter teeth head a lot, but I've switched to a heavy square string. The plastic teeth do cut brushy weeds and such better then the string, but they also cut through wire fence which is annoying when you're trimming near the electric fence or the chicken coop.

I've got several different brush saw blades, none of which have impressed me all that much. From circular saw design to things that look like airplane propellers. None of them cut all that well.

On a cool factor, these units all sound like dirt bikes, not weed wackers. That's pretty nifty.

The units are very solid and reliable. They are also one of the few two stroke tools that will start again next spring without requiring me to tear down and clean the carburetor (someday, I actually will put stay-bil in the gas before putting toys away for winter).

The 80/85 is far lighter on gas then the bigger one is. Neither are as gentle on gas as the toy weed wackers are.

Mine is an echo. Very nice maching. I've had absolutly no problems in 12 years of hard use. I thought I would change the original spark plug last year. So I pulled the plug out. I could not believe that it still looked like a new plug. So I put the sparkplug back in. Great value for the money.

FS80 and FS85 use the same engine. If you plan on maybe adding a brush saw blade later or other attachments then go with the FS85. I own the FS80,FS85, and the FS120. For real heavy and tough grass you can't beat the FS120. It's a lot heavier if you carry it all day and there are some attacchments that are not recommended for it (RPM's are a lot higher than the smaller units)
I also teach small engines and Stihl is excellent when it comes to tech support and warranty work.

We have two FS85 that is used nearly everyday during grass cutting season. These have stood up very well to bimbos, nutcases and highschool graduates that don't know what it means to mix oil with fuel. Straight gas has been put in them and they are still running. Going on 5 years. I plan to buy one for myself after the cheap ones that I have now go out.

I've got a Stihl FS85 that I've been happy with. It's definitely tough; I use a three-toothed brush blade to cut down 1-2" saplings, and the shock that puts on the drive shaft is incredible. I'm sure I would have snapped the shaft a long time ago on a lesser cutter.

The FS80 and FS85 may be overkill for you, they are pretty heavy machines. I haven't tried any of the attachments, although the chainsaw head looks like it would be good for pruning branches that aren't too high up. The attachments are pretty expensive, and look like a lot of aggravation to change out.

Whatever trimmer you get, make sure it has a solid drive shaft. A lot of the cheaper straight-shaft trimmers still use a flexible shaft.

As bbott mentioned, most of the commercial landscapers seem to use the Shindaiwa cutters.

The FS80 has a flexible shaft, the 85 is solid. Haven't replaced 1 yet, but they are lifetime guaranteed. Only the 85 will take the attachments, But all it takes is a solid shaft transplant to make it an 85.

I own both Stihl and Husky weekwackers.. For a variety of reasons, I like my Stihl a lot better than the Husky....

Some of the professional landscapers around here like the Shindawas as a less expensive alternative...
