For current code requirements, you will find your answer in NFPA 70-02 (NEC 2002) in Article 300, Section 300.14. However, check with your local electrical inspector to see what your local requirements are; they might not be using the current NEC; may even have an adopted localized code instead of the NEC!

The code requirement is six inches but I like 7
you should be able to buy a code book for about 80.00 dollars from any electrical supply house. But you'll need a good lawyer to decipher it.
What I would do is go to a good book store and pickup a good handymans book that has electrical tips in it.

By the way I'm an electrician.
