Could anyone here recommend a brand name/model of magnetic sweep? How does one compare to the other? From looking at catalogs , I kind of like the one made by Malco. It has a drop box behind the magnet. It's 24" wide. They make a wider one , but I thought it would be harder to manuver into narrow places. Anyone out there with experience with magnetic sweepers? Thanks , Scott Green

I knew a roofer that took an old pushmower deck and rigged up a sweep. He took a chunk of steel and wound it with copper wire. It was mounted under the deck where the mower blade used to go. then he took a car battery and attached the ends of the wire from underneath.

After a couple of passes across the lawn, he stopped on the driveway and disconnected the wires. Presto- all the nails in one spot to sweep up and dispose of.

Your electromagnet story reminded me of a somewhat funny one of my own. The story starts with a small electromagnet project that I built for my son. When I was done with it he took it to my work to show the guys his new toy. Of course this amazed them since they had no idea that it was possible. One of the guys asked me to teach him the principle of an electromagnet. So we spent about a 1/2 hour on the subject. The next day when I came to work he had made a magnet that was about 6" in diameter. He had followed all the principles that would make this monsterous thing as powerful as possible. So to give it a test we hooked it up to shop buzz box so that we could control how much amperage the thing would draw. If you got this beast to within a foot of the shop table you couldnt hold it back. And once it was stuck to the table the only way you could remove it was by shut off the power source.

Thank you all for your replies. And F14 , if you would , let us know how your magnet works out.

Hi Scott,

I wish I could use one of those here. My son-in-law having the brillant mind of a toad, decided to burn pallets because he was to lazy to drive to the wood pile where he could have picked-up already burn sized pieces without any cutting. He then dumped the ash box where the yard drag would spread nails over the drive ways, then dragged the drive ways. Thats been about 12yrs ago and I'm still picking up nails. So far no flats.

We have alot of black sand thats iron ferrite and would plug a magnet really fast.

I got a cheap one (about $50) from northern to use in the machine shop. works great for grinding dust also. took it home and my son had a great time using it around the driveway, paths etc. goes "Klick" everytime it attracts something. went crazy and purchased a 36" one with wheels (also from northern). the wheels makes it more managable as far as ground clearance goes. he has found some pretty nasty bent nailes around the paths to various buildings. its a wonder i haven't had more flats around here. anyway they will pay for themselves if you do much mechanical work outside or in the field.

This may seem silly, but I have had good luck just tying a couple of retreiving magnets I got from Harbor Freight to my boots with twine, so they drag on the ground. A couple of years ago I helped reroof a neighbor's house. Skinning off the old cedar shakes and replacing some decking put many nails on the ground. I did most of the cleanup and just had to keep cleaning the magnets off. By the time I had picked up all the junk on the ground, there were very few nails left. I then carefully shuffled my feet over the area to make sure the magnets contacted all the ground area. My neighbor said she never found any more stray nails and had no problems with flat tires on her car or riding mower.

I already had the magnets, which I use for this and that around the place. I think both of them totalled less than $10 cost. And it isn't much hassle to drag them around. You might take a little ribbing if someone sees you though. But you don't have something else to store like you would with a dedicated "sweeper".

Funny you should bring that up. I just ordered a 32" on wheels from Northern Tool. Just finished stripping and reshingling the roof on the house, and want to sweep for nails before running the riding mower over it.

I'll let you know how it works out.
