IH Farmall question

I know this is the "tool" board but since this is the only forum I normally visit here, I figured I post this here along with the Farmall board. Don't normally deal with farm tractors so I'm in the dark on this one.

Got an IH Farmall in my shop with a broken casting on the left side wheel gear area, next to gear box, opposite the seat side. In order to make a good weld on this casting, it is imperative that I remove the casting from the machine. Got a few questions I hope someone can help me with. The end of the casting, I assume where the shaft comes from the gear box has what looks like a bearing cap on it, three bolts holding a thin steel convex plate.

Four bolts hold the fender to the casting and the casting to the gear box with two more bolts on the bottom side.

Can I simply remove these bolts and slide the entire assembly off the shaft from the gear box then disassemble the rest of it to gain access to the inside of the casting or do I need to pull all the guts out before removing the casting? Anything I should know before taking this apart or is it self explanitory once I get in there?

Thanks for any help you can give me on this

Mark, from the limited description, my guess is that you may be working on a Farmall cub. The serial number would make it a 51. The left side drop axle housing has a thin plate over the axle stub. The right side is open. You are correct, you can remove the bolts and the entire housing should pull off. 2 things - drive some wooden wedges on each side of the front axle between the radiator housing & axle to stabilize the tractor so it won't pivot on the front axle. Second, that final drive housing is heavy. Use a sling and crane or hoist to support it.

Sorry for not putting this in the first post, only numbers I have are "126569" over top of "1800" on the tag but I can't read anything else to know what they are.
