I can't believe the cost to buy or rent a stump grinder. Have any of you fellas built one? I'd like to try to build one but I need an idea to start from!
Any thoughts are appreciated.

I've got a stump grinder for my high flow Bobcat. What a beating those things take! Replacement of cutting teeth, Hyd hoses, etc. is a MAJOR thing. They work very well, but the "consumables" can eat your bank account up!

Hey Tugboat,
Have you fella's over there forgotten about the good old dynamite.
I've blown out any number of stumps and a good few other unwanted ooglies with mainly gelignite and sometimes nitropril. (I've even blown the back wall out of a bank, legally mind you.)
It's got to be the quickest most cost effective way of moving inert quantities of most things.
Have a go it's fun to, don't forget the camera when you set her off.
Richard.

Dynamite huh??? I remember a friend useing it back in the 70's but I don't think the adverage guy can even buy it these days. I own 70 wooded acers in central Missouri that I would like to clear about an acre or two for a homestead and dynamite would do the trick but I don't think it is legal these days.

If they have some age on them, when conditions are not dry and windy,I soak them in kerosene and build a mound of coal and /or cut bottom of 55 gallon drum out and use top around the stump to burn them out. Burns down below the surface.

There's a tractor mount one in our market bulletin for $1000, minimum 50hp. A self contained one for $2600.

Hello, just a different idea on stump removal. If you have a number of stumps, maybe rent a small dozer and push them out. Dig a hole and bury the stumps and then you will have some extra dirt to fill in the holes and anywhere else the area is low. Just a thought, Phil

If you've used a stump grinder, then you know that they are pretty complicated contraptions. I really don't see how you could put one together from scratch and expect it to work as well or as safely as a commercial grinder.

Around here, they rent for about $250 per day. If I grind 25 stumps, then that's $10 a stump.

Hi Tugboat,

While I don't know much about them, I do know the newer ones are expensive. But I also know the older machines can be had at reasonable prices. A friend of mine has two old machines. I understand the older ones don't work as well, but if you're not trying to make a living with the unit, the lower cost is probably more important than speed and convenience. Happy shopping...Al English

Al; Thanks for the information. I'll see if I can find an older one. I'm not in the business but I have a small farm with a few stumps here and there. Thanks again! Tugboat

You can probably buy a servisable back hoe for less money. I had several stumps and blown over trees. Bought a old Ford 550 TLB and dug all my stumps and other odd jobs.
Ready to sell it now and I don't forsee any problems getting my 5K back.
