I cut firewood (not commercially) with a Husky 50 (16") and 55 (18") and an older Homelite XL350 (20"). Nothing wrong with the Homelite except that it's my Dad'sand somewhat dated. I want to get a mid-size Husky for use with a 20" bar and am torn between a 261 (which has been offered at a very good price by my local dealer since 261's aren't in the 2002 catalog) and a 365.

I had in mind that I needed a 4.0 cu. in. saw and that's the 365. I can buy one off the Internet for ~$40-50 more than the local price on the 261. The local shop wants ~$40 more than the Net dealer for the 365 (not surprisingly). I'm strongly inclined to buy whichever from the local guy for all the usual reasons but could use some input on whether I really need to consider a 365 over the 261. I expect the 261 will do everything I'll want, probably much better than the Homelite does now.

Anyone have any experience with either or both of these saws? Anything really good or bad about either model that should influence my choice?

Thanks in advance. -WSJ

I have used and sold Husky saws.

My personal preference would be the 365 which is the old 36 basically..

Horsepower to spare and with a tweaked card and the addition of AMSOIL 100-1 oil was clocked at about 14,500 in the R's. I DO NOT recomend the carb tweak for a long life but the AMSOIL is a definite must. Visit my site at www.aaasynthetics.com

I would buy the 261 model. I have worked on alot of the 261,s and own one also you won't have any problems as long as you use a good grade of mixing oil.

Used to be a Husky mech. This was 15-16 years ago, and I don't remember 365's so it's either a new or a consumer model. The Husky's with the gray tops were consumer models. Orange tops were pro models. I can whole heartedly recommened the 261. It's 4.0 ci and all of it is power. The ergonomics of the Husky are unsurpassed. Just make sure you used a top line mix oil, like Husky's, as a saw turning 13,000RPM needs a good saw oil. Don't use too much oil in the mix as we had problems with excess oil leading to heat build up which lead to crank bearing failure. Didin't happen alot, but Husky 's clearences are not designed for 25:1 mix.

I am not familiar with any of the saws mentioned, but since no one else has answered you, I'll suggest you check out the saw forum at the link below. I hope this helps...Al English
