I RECENTLY SNAGGED AN OLD HOMELITE 2 SELF-OILER CHAINSAW AT A YARD SALE FOR $10.00. THE ENGINE RUNS GREAT, THE ALL STEEL(OR PIG IRON)BODY IS KINDA TORN UP AND THE TWO BARS THAT CAME WITH IT ARE USELESS. I AM LOOKING FOR A NEW BAR FOR MY SAW, BUT HAVE RUN INTO ALOT OF BRICKWALLS WITH THE LOCAL SAW SHOPS SINCE DEERE BOUGHT OUT HOMELITE. THE OVERALL LENGTH IS 15 1/4", SO, DOES IT NEED A 14" OR 16" BAR. AND SHOULD I GO WITH A SPROCKET TOO? ALSO, THE ALL-THREAD THAT MOUNTS THE BAR TO THE ENGINE IS STRIPPED, CAN I REPLACE THIS OR JUST RETHREAD IT AND USE A SMALLER NUT? FINALLY, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A SAW WITH JUST ONE MOUNTING BOLT FOR THE BAR, AM I MISSING SOMETHING?THE SAW HADN'T BEEN STARTED IN TWO YEARS, AND IT FIRED RIGHT UP! PLEASE, SOMEBODY GIVE ME SOME GOOD OLD FASHIONED ADVICE HERE!

Great little saw, very handy to use.
The reason the bolt stripped was that the prior owner thought the bar was slipping, so he tried to stop it by over tightening it. The bolt is easily replaced P/N69195 $2.14

I believe "stihltech" is right, they were a throw away saw. I have a SXL which I bought new and threw away 3 years later because somebody messed with the Carb and it set up. Now I own a Husky and very happy.

TURN OFF THE CAPS. Sounds like you have a Homelite XL-2. It's a twin trigger climbing saw. Lots of pros used to use them years ago. Very popular.

The body is all cast magnesium. You measure the bar length from the front of the saw to the tip of the bar. An overall 15.5" sounds like a 14". Lots of companies, including Oregon, Windsor, etc. makes bars. Any decent saw shop should be able to look up bookfulls of bars for your saw. If the old bars are worn out, spring for a new chain and sprocket, too. Don't want to wear out your new bar. Most smaller saws (including Stihl and Husky) use one bolt for bar mounting. The stud is replacable. It either screws out or presses out to the inside. Any Homelite dealer should be able to order parts.

Make sure the carb is tuned correnctly after all this time.

A lot of saw shops have dead units laying around. It would be cheaper to pick one up, could even be free, at a dealer. Do Not spend a lot of money on it. It was a throwaway saw when built.

i'd throw that saw out and chaulk the ten bucks up to education. you'l spend way more than it's worth trying to fix it and have nothing when you get done. yes tehy only had one bolt holding the bar on, maybe that's why it's stripped.
