Got a small orphan lathe at a flea market for a song. It came minus a chuck. It has a treaded half inch drive shaft coming out of the head. I need to know how a chuck would mount to the shaft and where I could get one . Thanks for any and all advice.

You might want to give E-bay a try. I have bought quite a few things including a chuck off there. I was looking for 1"-8 threads, but I think I saw some 1/2"-20 chucks from time to time. I found I just had to be patient...
Ebay has a category for "Metal working equipment" under "Business, office & commercial"

A 1/2" spindle is pretty unique. Is this a Craftsman/AA 109? Some chucks are threaded, but most mount on a threaded faceplate.

You would do well to head over to the rec.crafts.metalworking newsgroup. If you do have a Craftsman 109, you also should join the Atlas/Craftsman Yahoo group.

Chucks are usually mounted on such a spindle by a threaded adapter. I don't know where you would get one that small though. I sometimes hang out over at the Home Machinists discussion forum and they might help you out.
