I know there's some sharp electricians on this board, so I'm looking here for some advice on repairing a Hunter ceiling fan. It's a high dollar fan (by my standards) and it suddenly quit working either direction on High speed. I immediately suspected the switch and anticipated a quick easy fix, but when I got it apart, I discovered a five lead capacitor in the switch circuit. The switch appears to test OK, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at with this capacitor. It is a potted device in a rectangular container, and it's labeled "10mfd/5mfd/250vac". Using my Fluke meter, I can get 4.85 mfd out of a couple of lead combinations, but never can find anything close to 10 mfd. The switch is single pole, so I don't think it is parallelling the 4.85's to make 10 mfd. I want to think that this capacitor is a dud, but I remember working on an induction motor that used capacitance to drop the speed, so if that is the case with this motor, that would not explain why it won't run on high. I've already wasted more time on this thing than it's worth and I haven't bought any parts yet - I guess it's the "Hero" thing, if you know what I mean. Promises have been made. . .

I have just recently purchased aand installed a ceiling fan. It is out of balance. Can I purchase a balance kit? If so where? I live in Naples, FL. Thanks!

Max

Nice site Joe - thanks for the tip. I ordered a new cap and switch too just for good measure. I didn't like the feel of the "push in" wire connections on the switch. The tech person listened to my test findings and confirmed the dead capacitor.

Have you checked the windings to make sure the high speed winding isn't open?

Thanks for the reply Bigdog. Yeah, the windings are OK. I ordered a new cap and switch based on the tech person's recommendation. Check out the website that Joe mentioned above. Thanks again!
