Don't beleive phone company when they tell you it's your equipment at fault. If you have tested to jack on side of house tried more than one phone (corded) It's their problem. I've been told Low voltage when two years later they finaly discover bad equipment. fought with Phone company over ISDN line that would only connect call from Point B to Point A when i needed A to B.( it's your equipment they said) finaly sent two repair people one to each end and they said look call from B to A works A to B doesn't Well Duh!! isn't that what i said a month ago??? Bell gave $4000 credit to customer to cover expense of me chasing phone company problem at $125 an hour

All the comments are to consider. The static voltage on the line is in the 48-52 volt range and the voltage with the phone off hook or connection made should drop to 8-15 volts. The ring voltage is normally 90 volts 20 HZ. What is your problem? Your telephones or computer or ? Most problems not in the phone itself are the jack.

With line open and unbusy, normal central office voltage is about 48-52 volts DC. Brian

I agree with Mark,

Bell voltage is in the range you are talking about. "talk" voltage is very low...Al English

I'm not a phone guy, only do my own work.

I know is that ring voltage can get upwards of 80 VDC which can smart a good bit if it gets you.

Most problems I've seen is with wiring. Corroded / open connections, shorted jacks, ect. If they checked to the house and it's good, I would first unplug all phones and try one at a time plugged directly into the customer side of the NID (network interface device) box on the outside of the house. If you're good there, follow the wiring into the house and check all connections along the way. If you have an older style NID without the phone plug in it, request a new one. Also check inside for the old style lightning strike arrestors, new NID's have them inside but old lines had them in the house. When these go bad, you can get all kinds of problems.

If you are not up on the systems, it may be best for you to pay the phone company to do these checks and or repairs because you can get electrocuted and or cause many other problems.

I work in a Telecomunications warehouse and I was told that it is 24 volt DC, positive ground.
