Oil filter on a 22 HP Briggs and Straton

Has anyone found or can anyone recommend a low priced oil filter for the 22 HP, Twin Cyl, overhead valve, Briggs engine. The factory filter called for retails for over $10. It appears similar to automotive engine oil filters that sell for $2 to $4. Is there a cross reference to an automotive oil filter that will work, and that might even be better. Slightly larger filter might give increased oil capacity and slightly increase oil cooling, perhaps? Any help will be appreciated, Gordon in IN

Just went through the same exercise after buying a John Deere with an 18 hp B&S Vanguard. Except that the JD part was even more!

Finally found a Purolator cross reference to the JD # and, lo and behold, it's the same filter as my 6 cyl. Toyota truck. Can't recall the Purolator # but the Fram # is 3614 which, like the Purolator, you can get anywhere.

Probably the same filter as the ones I use on my Briggs 18hp Vangard v-twin. Same filter as the one on daughter's Plymouth Sundance 4cyl - non turbo!

I just went through this last month for a 20HP Onan. Most of the filter websites are set up only for car applications. If you go to the wixfilters.com site, you can do a filter search for off-road equipment. Once you find the Wix number you can either find a dealer near you or use the Wix number and cross reference over to the brand that you want to buy. If you want to find a longer filter, just start opening boxes in the store; you'll want to know if it's 3/4-16 or metric thread. - Slughammer

Gordon --

Baldwin Filters almost certainly has a filter for your Briggs & Stratton engine, and their website has an excellent on-line catalog section. Baldwin is also behind the Hastings-brand filters, which might be more readily available through "normal" auto parts channels. The Hastings website also has an excellent on-line catalog section. I don't remember the URLs off the top of my head, but any of the search engines should turn up the references if you search for "Baldwin filter" and "Hastings filter".

I'd also expect that any professional-grade auto parts store (such as a NAPA-affiliated store) would be able to provide a filter.
