Just a couple of comments:

For the newspaper, it works great, although 1 or 2 sheets won't last the season ... 6 should be good. A Better idea I've found is to grab all of the cardboard you can get your hands on and use that instead (but you gotta remove tape and don't use slick stuff or it won't decay but just cause a mess). Mulch is always good all around even if you don't have paper under it.

Dave F: A fungus normally won't kill a plant quickly. It's usally a slow death or perhaps even just a long sickly unproductive life. My guess would be the squash vine borer if it was a quick demise with no other evidence (they live in the vines of squash plants so you don't see anything except for maybe a small entrance hole at the vine's base).

Joe, the mulching idea with news papers sounds like a good one, I have an question for you. For the last 2 years my wife had been trying to raise pumpkins, 1st. year squash/ pumpkins bugs hit & did them in, last year I kept an eye out for these nasty bugs, then all the sudden the plants/vines started to turn yellow & died very quickly. county extension agent thought it might of been caused by an fungus or blight, I planted in an different location, not the same place, going to plow up an third location this season have you got any suggestions in what I am doing wrong. Thanks Dave F.

There's a bunch of good books ouot there detailing all the different diseases plants can get. As far a which one to get and solve the weeding problem at the same time, I'd recommend Rodales Complete Book of Organic Gardening, and Complete Book of Composting. Dated material and out of print, but both available on EBay and at www.abebooks.com. I tried all the commercial herbicides and whatnot, and except for Roundup on Canada thistle, I tossed them all. Go with raised beds and heavy mulch and sit back and relax. BTW, any weeds in the garden the kids are raising to make money for themselves should be the kids problem. Hand them a nice sharp hoe and let them at it. Builds character, caluses, and helps them learn the value of a dollar.

I have'nt planted mine yet but I'm going to lay down one or two sheets of newspaper and cover that with some old straw to mulch around the plants. That way all I'll have to weed is right around the top of the mound. A lot cheaper and safer than chemicals.

Preen works good for me but then you put it on after the pumpkins are up and also used grass clippings. chris

There are several herbicides. Call your county agricultural agent (county or state offices in your phone book) or contact the horticulture dept of your land grant university. -- or even your local garden center, if its any good.

I have found a hoe to work pretty good but it is not very fun. Matter of fact it stinks and it will break your back.

i'm with keith. what are the kids doing? just a few minuits even once a week should keep the weeds out of a half acre. by midsummer the pumpkins will shade the ground and you can take the kids to the fair.

You can always try Monsanto or ADM to see what genetically-engineered seed they might have that'll stand up to their herbicides.
