The nut that falls into two pieces and looks broken is broken, but it is supposed to be so don't worry. That's how they get it on the chuck. Just put it back together so the breaks match. If you mix up all the parts it is possible to figure out how to get it together, it will take some trial and error but you can do it. Don't press the outside on until it all looks right with you holding the broken nut together. If you get the jaws out of order they will not close together, that's all so it is easy to see.

You need to press it apart. Find something that will just fit the outer shell on the threaded or tapered end. Close the jaws. Then find something that will fit the opposite end where the closed jaws are. DO NOT press by using the jaws. Use a vise and push the jaw portion out.
You should someway mark the position of each jaw before total dis-assembly. Reverse to put chuck back together, only omit the piece you used on the treaded or tapered end, it is not needed. Be sure jaws are perfectly alligned and in closed position before reassembly or else you may totally ruin the chuck. The 2 inner rings, there is a right way and a wrong way for them to go in so pay attention how they come out. I have repaired many chucks and have always had good luck with them. Remove any small burrs before re-assembly. Good luck and hope you can savvy my poor instruction quality

Jacobs website has a section on how to do it. Sorry I don't have the exact link.
