A good deal on a Millermatic 250?

I have a chance to purchase locally a Millermatic 250 welder with very low use and a couple rolls of wire for $1000.

This is exactly the welder I have been looking for, but I am trying to justify the expenditure at this time. I want to have one welder for a wide variety of tasks- repairing tractor implements, small fabrication, occasional aluminum, some sheet metal.

He has had it about 3 years and paid $1700 for it. It is almost certainly out of warranty.

Does this sound like a really great deal that I am not likely see again?

Well, I went ahead and bought the 250, after much negotiation with my wife ;-)

I have not yet tried it out (I need to wire up a 230v outlet in my shop), but it is a beautiful thing, and appears to be in great shape. Probably overkill for what I need, but I always like to have a better tool than I need for the job, rather than the other way around!

Hi Leon,
How's it goin? The warranty on the Millers is 3 years parts and labor. $1000.00 is a good price. I used to get demos from the factory trade shows and those usually ran around $1200.00. They had some warranty left though.

If you plan to run aluminum you will need knurled drive wheels and if the liner has been used for steel you should get a new teflon liner for the aluminum and dedicate it to aluminum only. If the gun cable is longer than the standard 12' then you may want to opt for a spool gun and module 2 to prevent feeding problems. That's the pricey way to go but if you weld a lot of aluminum it would be of great benefit to you.

I would personally go for it. I had the same unit as a "Sales Reps demo model". He wanted $1400 for it after I used it for two years. I ended up giving the machine back to him. It is a real nice reliable machine and for $700 under retail I say buy it!

I talked my boss into buying a 250 about 2 years ago haven't had the first bit of trouble with it. At a grand it's a good deal. The only thing I working on now is the spool gun the 250x comes set up for it the 250 doesn't I got the spool gun kit and module for $1100.00 haven't tried it yet but it should do great.Lots of luck.
