I'm about to finish up my home-built old fashioned wooden block-and-tackle project, and I'd like to finish it off with some manila or hemp rope. Just don't seem like the new plastic stuff would be right.

Anybody got a source for "real" rope?

Get a copy of woodenboat magazine. Because boat restores use the real stuff for 100 year old boats you can get a small quantity of rope through the adds. Don't modernize your restoration with ugly modern stuff even if it is stronger. Do those tractor guys put grade 8's instead of square head bolts.... I hope not!!

I have around 200 feet of 3/4" hemp rope that is 50 years old or so. It still has it`s nice brown color. It was never left out in the weather and I was pulling stumps with it and my blocks a few years ago. It is hanging on the nose of a 37 JDA in my barn. A length of the rope might go nice with your old style blocks. If interested, I will cut off what you need. John in Pa.

Try a Mom/Pop hardware store, farm stores, and perhaps an internet search if you like to shop online.

You don't say what you're using your block and tackle for, but most hemp and manila rope today is of very poor quality. I wouldn't use it for lifting anything that I didn't want to fall. Better to use a synthetic line, dacron if you can find it as it stretches less.

Because of the very poor quality of natural fiber rope these days, some companies sell synthetic line that looks like manila for use on old boats. A google search on "synthetic manila line" turned up this URL, I'm sure there are others.

Thanks Mark. I also found a marine supply place in MD that carrys hemp rope. Might try the synthetic tho.

The B&T is mostly for looks, prolly won't ever lift anything heavier than my pipe-frame hay conveyor.

Interestingly enough, today Dad gave me an old metal double block and tackle. It has one inch hemp rope on it. Now I've gotta clean it up for my den.
