I have a 40 yr. old aircompressor with a two stage head and 5 h.p. motor, Can I replace the copper tubing that runs from the head to the tank with a hydraulic hose, I can't seem to get the old tubing w/compression fittings lined up properly and it's leaking air when the pump is running.

Hi Johnny,

When the compressor has been running for a while that tube gets very hot. How hot depends on the operating pressure and the compressor's efficiency. But even in the best case it gets hot enough to burn instantly. While hydraulic hose could stand the pressure, I doubt it could tolerate the heat. The tube, and any flares, ferrules or fittings should all be standard size stuff. That means a new tube can be made from available components if needed. Good luck...Al English

Hi Johnny,

When you make the new line, make a 360 loop with the CU tube and it'll connect best. This gives you some movement for alignment with the fitting.

Great idea T_Bone! This will also provide more cooling area. The CU tube on my unit has radiator fins on it for extra cooling area.

I'll go along with the other guys, especially about the hydraulic hose not taking the heat and melting. T_Bone, with the 360 degree loop is also an excellent choice however, I have seen some units that are designed in such a way that replacing the copper line with copper is nearly impossible. You have another option going with high pressure high temperature stainless steel flex hose. Similar to the rubber hydraulic line, you can bend it where you need it without a lot of trouble and get leak free installation. The cost is considerably higher for the HP/HT SS flex hose but it will last indefinitely. You won't get the heat transfer you will from this as you will with copper but if the if the situation dictates, you have the option of using it. Be absolutely sure you get high temp/high press. flex! Some of this type hose comes with a rubber liner that will not handle the heat for this application, also metal flex should be sized one diameter larger than what you have now, IE: if the existing copper is 3/8", than you should use 1/2" flex.
