I need to know if my window was shot out by a punk kid with a BB gun or if it was from me cutting the grass. I need to know what the diameter of a BB is. The penetration hole is .110"

Regardless of what broke the window, it will probably end up out of you pocket expense. Depending on type of window and HO ins you have, how much you will be out. Been there..

A BB is .22 cal., a pellet is .177. You can tell the differance between either and gravel. If you suspect faul play take the truck to the Sheriff/Highway Patrol Office. They should have an accident investigator/accident reconstruction guy who can tell you for sure. I use to do accident reconstruction and fatility accident investigation and we got those request all the time, no problem.

A standard BB is .177, a pellet can be .177, .20, .22, .25, and up depending on what kind of gun you have.

John in MA had a good point, except that auto glass will hold together better than interior glass.

Also, the fancier bb guns use .22 cal bbs. They'll also tend to be much more powerful guns.

I'd tend to agree with the other posters, but just a couple personal observations:

1. Unless this kid has a really cheap or old BB gun, it wouldn't bounce off. Almost all of the ones sold in stores now can easily go through window glass.

2. The only time I ever shot a window out with a BB rifle was fairly recently. Version 1.0 of my basement shooting range didn't take ricochets into account. Anyway, the BB bounced and went through a thin plate glass window. Left a big, jagged hole about 1" in diameter. FWIW, this was with a fairly powerful rifle (Daisy 880).

Get ya a BB gun and take a shot at a discarded auto glass and compare . A broken window will give enough room to compare .

Yes the hole is like you guys described it, funnel shaped with a 1/2 or so diam. concave. I think it was a bb gun.

I'll go along with Shep on this one... most bb gun damage that I've seen leave a perfectly round hole with a funnel shaped crater on the glass.

bb's are .177 in diameter so if the bb went actually went through the glass, it would leave at least a .177 diameter hole.

However, given all the variables, you may never know for sure what happened unless you find a bb laying around somewhere nearby... and even then you can't be sure.

In my boyhood experience a BB leaves a small entrance roundish hole while the back side of the glass has about 1/2" round piece missing. The remaining glass will be very clear with hardly any distortion when looking thru it. Looking from the backside of the glass it would resemble a shallow funnel on a very small scale.

Small rocks tend to shatter glass upon entrance and leave a jagged edge with whitish distortion. This is based on Railroad Inspectors assessment of damage done to a Burlington Northern caboose sitting in Hope, ID in 1976. Needless to say the hole looked like a funnel and I lost a BB gun for a whole summer and the Railroad got some free summer labor. :)
FWIW,

If memory serves, standard BB's are .177 caliber.

But they normally bounce off leaving a smaller hole. Pretty small stone, I'd vote for the jd.

Kurt, You'll probably never know for sure. Unless the angle of the spinning mower blades is such that they would direct a stone high enuf to hit your window, it may very well have been a BB. Do you have any likely suspects? On the other hand, my mower picked up and threw a very small stone at the front of my pickup. I heard it hit but didn't realize until after I finished mowing that it totally missed the grill and had pierced the radiator as evidenced by the puddle of anti-freeze on the ground. I am now even more careful about making sure that no people or animals are in the vicinity when I mow.

My only experience came from a small stone (Dime sized) that hit my buddy's car when we were on the road near P.A. on Route 17 (86 East). Left a jagged bash. If worst comes to worse---pick up some BB's yourself and put i inside your car/truck. The inspector won't be able to tell where they came from.

If the BB doesn't have barrel scuff marks or a dent from hitting the glass when inspected your lie will be caught. Trying provide flase information in this stuff doesn't work and will get yourself busted.
