How do I wire an 18hp BS engin?

I have an 18hp Briggs engin with electric start. It's a new engin and I want to wire it for a key start and stop like a car. I have a key switch, battery, wiring and selonoid. The two problems I'm having is there are two hot wires that go to the selonoid. One from the battery and one from the switch. How does the wire from the switch work, when both are hot wires and they mount to the same post on the selonoid? Second question. There is a small box on the side of the engin. It has two wires going to what looks like the points and condenser. The third wire is red and must hook up some where. I was told it helps charge the battery and the red wire has to be hooked to the possitive side of the battery or switch. Can anyone give me some ideas on how to go about wiring these two items up to a key switch.
Thanks,
Jr

JR i have an older 18 HP Briggs. May not be exactly like yours. Will tell you how mine works. The solenoid has tow BIG terminals and two SMALL terminals. The big terminals go 1 to the starter and 1 to the battery. The little terminals go 1 to tractor frame and the other to the key swithc so when you turn the switch the little wire is "HOT". It pulls in contacts and makes the two big wires connect inside the relay and you get power to the starter to crank. NExt for the littel black box. I have two. One is the magneto and has two spark plug wires coming out of it. Also has one black wire conected to the tracotr frame (ground) and the other goes to a terminal on the key switch to "ground" it when the key is turned off. The other black box is the diode assembly to charge the battery with the small alternator built into the motor. It has a red wire that goes to the swithc and in tied to the + battery terminal with the switch on. The other terminals on the box are orange which goes to the light switch for extra current when lights are on, and the red wire goes to the alternator plug on the motor (probably already connected). There are two small diodes in this box, like an external voltage regulator. You got to connect them right or they will burn. Hope this helps you somewhat.

Thanks Steve,
I have a little different setup. The solenoid only has two large posts and one small post. The top large post goes to the battery and the bottom large post goes to the starter. The motor I took this solenoid off of had a wire coming from the switch and connected to the top post along with the battery cable, with a 20 amp fuse, in line. The switch was broken so I can't tell where this wire hooks to the switch. It looks like it has to be the terminal that makes the starter contact. (key all the way to the left in the spring mode.)
The small post on the solenoid has a white wire going back some where. It checks out to be a ground. (Like clutch has to be pushed in to get the solenoid to ingauge.)I'm not sure what this little white wire is for.
I was told that little box is for charging the battery, as you stated. Also I was told that if the red wire was not installed on the possitive of the battery, it would burn up. Same as you state. Am I safe in putting the red wire on the switch that turns the power on?
One more question. I have a kill wire on the new 18 Briggs. How can I fix it so the motor will shut down when I turn the key off?
I do appreciate all your help.
Thanks,
Jr

Im probably not much help, but some FORD solenoids only had 1 small wire. The IGNITION switch goes between the battery terminal and the small terminal. touch those two terminals together and see if the solenoid clicks. I think the solenoid has to be bolted to the tractor frame to work, this is its "other wire" or ground. Sounds like you have the charging system figured out, as far as i can see. Lastly, my tractors ignition switch "KEY" has one two terminals that are connected in the off position, or one that is grounded to the case, when off. That is were the magnito wire connects. You ground the mag to kill the spark and stop the motor. wish i knew more.

Jr, The simplest way to tell you is do throw away the key switch and get you a push button start switch. You can find them at any parts store. Second get a kill switch from napa the kind that hooks to your belt loop. This switch works when you pull the cord off of it. The switch will mount to your dash.

Wiring it is very simple. You stated that you had a three pole cylinoid. Two big poles and one little pole. Take start button run one wire from EITHER side of start switch to battery side of cylinoid, take another wire and go from OTHER side of start switch and wire it to little pole at bottom of cylinoid. Then run a wire off of your other big post on cylinoid to the starter. Next take kill switch will probably have white and black wire run the black wire to ground on frame. Take white wire and run it to coil wire. This switch makes the circut when kill switch chord is attached to main kill switch. You will understand when you see kill switch. It keeps the coil from grounding out. When you pull the kill chord it sends the coil to ground therfore it will not fire. Now the charging system has a diode on the wire coming out from underneath your flywheel. The wire with the diode is your battery wire. Hook it straight to the POSITIVE side of your BATTERY. The other wire is for your lights if you have them. If you dont have lights DO NOT hook this wire up you will burn your charging system up.

Questions, chris
