Chainsaw just up and quit running the other day. Can't figure out the problem. I have good spark, good compression, and I am getting fuel. It seems tremendously harder to pull now, and when I do get it running, I have to run it wide open and you can just see the gas/oil mix spraying like crazy into the carburator. Seems like it is almost choking itself out on fuel. I dunno how to properly adjust the "H" and the "L" screws on the carb to fix that problem. Do you have any other suggestions that I might try. My Dad bought it new when I was kid and I don't really want to get rid of it, everthing else is in fine shape. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

Remove the muffler and look in the exhaust port. You will see the piston. It should be smooth with small lines running across it. If you see score marks going up and down it or it looks rough, you have found the problem. Most likely an air leak as in another post here. Cure is a new piston if you are lucky, cylinder and piston if not. After cylinder and piston are off, look at bearing cages very carefully. Should be intact with balls evenly spaced.
Note that there are different size pistons or this saw. Measure yours before ordering. Pulse hose and fuel hose rot are very common on this model.

In addition to the clogged muffler screen, make sure the carberator is not loose.

Don't mean to worry you, but what I think the problem might be is the saw developed an air leak
probably around the crank seal, scorring the cylinder, that's why it pulls harder now. Pull the
plug, if it has been burning quite white, the air
leak leans it out and it almost siezed up. If this
is the case it will take a new piston, cylinder, and rings, and new crank seal. High and low speed
jets should be screwed all the way in then low
should be back out about 1 full turn, high should
be backed out just a little less than a full turn.
Hope this is not your problem, hope it's something
that won't cost so much money.

How about a partially engaged chain brake ?

Unless there's a piece of crud stuck in the carb, the jets won't go out of wack by themselves.
Muffler clogging usually happens gradually and you lose power over time.

I've had an 028AVE Super since '82... great little pro saw. I've cut tons of wood with it (literally 15 tons last year)

It still runs like a top. It has never needed service, I even think the original spark plug is in it.

Only thing is that it's getting a little heavier as I get older. My Husky 51 cuts as well and is a couple pounds lighter.

However, I don't know how well the Husky will run after 20 years.

But what the heck, I don't know if I'll be running in 20 years !

You might have a partial clog in the carb due to fuel going stale. I'd pull off the carb and blast all passges with carb cleaner. I'd also install a carb rebuild kit w/new diaghram.

To adjust the carb go here (complete with WAV files!!!):

www.madsens1.com/sawtune.htm

If it still has problems just take it to a dealer.

The Stihl 028 is one of the best saws ever. It's definately a keeper and worth throwing some money at to get back to 100%.

I have a 029 stihl and it runs like a raped ape and I have cut up lots and lots of hardwood trees with it. I would give the muffler thing a try.

I have a 15 year old 28 super. It still runs like a new one and it has cut a tremendous amout of wood. Try taking the muffler apart and cleaning the screen. That is one of the few things that has ever needed service on mine. Also there is a plastic pawl for the pull cord that needs replaced every once in awhile. If that is wore it makes it hard to pull the starter cord. I would bet cleaning the muffler will have it running good again.

I will definitely give that a try. I guess I didn't know there was a screen. Learn something new everyday!! I'll check the pawl as well! Thanks a lot!

Sounds like it might be time for an overhaul on the engine. If your dad bought it when you were a kid that would equate to at least ten years old. How many cords of wood would you say it has cut? Piston pin could be binding rod to crank bearing could be shot. Just some thoughts. Is the chain binding on the bar? Have you tried to run the engine with the bar and chain or just the chain removed to eliminate the possibility that these might be the problem? Post back with the remedy.

All attempts to start have been made without the bar attached. I wanted to eliminate as many variables as possible. I think the saw is actually about 15 years old. (Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm only 25, still just a kid.) Anyway, did some checking and found out that "H" stands for High, and "L" stands for low. I guess any dummy could have figured that out except for me. So I think maybe those are out of whack - I'll give em' a try and see what happens. The saw really hasn't seen that much wood. I bet there was a period of about 8 years where it might have been fired up once or twice, but just last summer I had trouble with it and got it serviced. I used the heck out of it the last year and all of sudden it's acting up. I'll check in to it more and let you know. Thanks for the post.

Don't clean the screen in the muffler, throw it away and replace it. If you clean the screen and put it back in, you have a chance of it breaking and falling into the exhaust port, getting into the engine and doing damage. It is a good "safety valve". It is needed by law if used in State Forest Preserves and on your own land, It prevents fires. On the wild side, if the ignition timing was off, it would act that way also. I have seen sheared fly-wheel keys on chain saws. I would pull either the muffler or carb and look into the cylinder. Peek at it's condtion. You say you have good compression. Good compression is 120 lbs. or there about. I'm not an expert on Stihl. I am thinking that a Stihl 028 is a piston ported saw. If I am wrong, then these facts would change.
