I'm also posting this on the garden tractor board. A fellow at work split his Peerless Hydrostatic SilentTrac LTH transmission apart this weekend. Turns out that a simple pin did not have the end peened correctly and it backed out locking up the drive. We know that it takes 80W90 gear oil in one side; any idea to the kind of oil for the hydraulic side? Tried the peerless website; they want you to do a transaxle swap.

Thank You for the replies. The fellow went to a mower shop that was nice enough to call a service number that they had. Turns out it was straight 20W. He has it back together and it is working.

I think my Ariens just calls for 20w motor oil.

My Deere 140 has a sunstrand hydrostatic and uses Dextron auto transmission fluid.

Use Hy-tran. Good stuff! Case IH dealers stock it.
