I was wondering if others have problems, with Advance Auto, or is it just me. When it comes to an adjustment or replacement of the brakes, with so called Life Time Warranty, they always come up with some kind of an excuse to weasle out of replacing there brakes, if they don't want to honor their warranty why offer one. Gotta watch the wording on the parts from all stores including Napa which has been a hassle from day one around here. "Limited lifetime" usually has a catch as to age, number of replacements or whatever. "Lifetime" means just that and will hold in court if need be. Mfg's and stores can NOT sell any item with the statement "life time warranty" and have limits on this warranty later on in the wording. Limits only apply if the wording reads only "warranty" or "limited warranty" from the start.

I took note that places like Advanced, Autozone, Discount and so forth have changed their packaging to read exactly what they off for a warranty. Many of the older packages simply read "lifetime warranty" and then went on to spell out limits of it somewhere else on the box or receipt. If the box itself or the receipt reads "lifetime warranty" at the top, they must replace the item or refund the purchase price for as long as you own it.

I went through this with a few things from different places, one of them being Discount Auto Parts. I had a customer purchase parts for her truck at discount auto and the package read "lifetime warranty" and nothing else. The sales reciept also read "lifetime warranty" but went on to spell out a "limited lifetime" of one year from date of purchase. The part failed about 16 months from when they purchased it and when returned to the store they tried to push the issue of 1 year. When I asked if they would like to take their argument to court, they declined and replaced the part. Another problem I had was purchasing an item from one autozone store and trying to return it at a different one. I never used the part nor even opened the package. They said " you have to return it to the store you bought it at". I came back to the shop and called their corporate office explaining the problem. About 20 minutes later, the delivery guy came to my shop to pick up the part and issue a cash refund on the spot without a question.

Napa has been a pain in the @$$ to deal with for as long as they've been around. I don't know if it's only the stores in my area or not beause I won't even deal with them anymore, I'll go to the dealer and pay double if need be before even considering napa. More often than not, I ordered parts and when they got there, the wrong part was in the box then it's a major hassle trying to return the part as the wrong one. Warranty is another thing with napa, unless you have the original box in excellent condition, they won't honor the warranty. Sorry, but everytime I work on a vehicle, you're sure to get some paw prints on the box which is enough for them to deny the warranty claim.

Sounds like a problem with your local store. The Advance I deal with is nothing like that. They handle the warranty claims without a problem, and are even comfortable with me taking extra parts when I do a job, allowing me to return those I don't use (such as vehicles with multiple caliper listings, etc).

Most of these places are gambling that you won't still own the car when it quits. As a rule if you are planning on keeping it for some time you are better off to buy a original replacement part.

Sometimes you can win. I have replaced the lifetime warrantied alternator 3 times over the years on my GM. After I found out that the serpentine belt drives are bad on the bearings. Averaging 70k from each alternator, yes currently at 240k!

Never been an issue here. They've looked at me funny on occasion but I figured it was because I was returning a 6-7 year old part. As long as I have the original box and receipt, no argument. There's a pile of their boxes in the loft over my shop so I sure hope they haven't had a change of attitude.

VaTom, In my area, its seems like its policy to give you grief, & they are starting to give you only 1 (one) free replacement and they are relucant in doing that. Dave F.

Dave hit the nail on the head and speaks from experience. They will only replace it once, this is what they call a "limited" warranty. Many others are doing it. I needed brake pads for my f-150, and went to Napa and bought their best. Later, I discovered that for the same price, i could have gone to the Ford Dealer and got factory pads which included the new hardware kit. Advance Auto is not the only one with limited warranties as I've said. Profit I guess counts.
