How do you get carbon out of a head?

I have an aluminum head from an old Wisconsin engine that has almost 1/4" of carbon (wonder if it even had rings in it). Is there anything that will loosen this stuff up & make it easier to remove? I have been scraping it out & soaking it in a parts washer but it is slow going & I am afraid of gouging the aluminum up really badly.

Any help appreciated.

I use glass beads in a blasting cabinet. I tried oven cleaner once it destroyed the aluminum. I would not recomend the dishwasher because I have a customer who owns an appliance repair company and he explained that the seals will not last because they are made to withstand animal fats not hydrocarbons. He told me this after I told him how I washed my tools in the dishwasher. Neal

Believe or not water will soften built up carbon. I was overhauling a 4 banger for a friend and she took the head home and put it in her dish washer. A couple of hours later she returned with a clean, shiney cylinder head.

DON'T LET YOUR WIFE CATCH YOU DOING THIS! ;)

Go to Wal-Mart and buy a few cans of Liquid Wrench. I found out by accident that Liquid Wrench is good for removing carbon deposits from cylinder heads, mufflers, etc. It may take a few soakings to dissolve it, but it does do it. I have used it on aluminum Briggs heads and an aluminum Lawn-Boy muffler without problems.

I use a chemical in home heating furnaces to burn carbon out. I don't know if it would work in other places.

Go to the parts counter at your local GM dealer and ask for a can of Top Engine Cleaner. This stuff was made especially for removing carbon deposits and does so very well.
