Got the bill yesterday for my 10 year check on my life time lease tanks. According to sopplier DOT requires that all tank be inspected every 10 years. My supplier just bills me once in 10 years figuring I will swap them many times in 10 years. They keep track of checking the tanks. Tanks should last forever

I have felt that if they aren't dented or damaged or rusty, the tank will probably be good, can remember back twenty years or so, was hooking up an oxygen cylinder, and noticed it was dated 1948! Looked around the shop and found several from 1956, only 25 years old, treat them with all the respect an undetonated bomb deserves. John in Nebraska

High pressure gas cylinders have a very long service life, I am sure you will find some more than 50 years old. The average service life of an O2 cylinder is 20,000 cycles. That is filled to full pressure and completely emptied. If they are not damaged they will last almost forever.

I have kept tanks for as many as 15 years and had no problem exchanging them. You don't have your tank refilled, you exchange it for a full tank. You might ask if you are still curious, but I don't even look at the dates on the tanks.

I worked as the general foreman for a cylinder mfg plant. The cylinder will typically have something like this stamped on it

CTC/DOT3AA-2015 M8004 ser# 9SCM91 +*

Basic info here is it can be used in Canada or the US Serial# so it can be checked back for info on that individual cylinder from the manufacturer, who bought it how many, when it was made, batch of steel it is made from and finally hydro test report. The 9SCM91+* tells me it was made the 9th month at SCM in 1991 the + tells me it is rated for 10% overfill and the * (star) it can be used 10 years before being retested (Hyrdo test) instead of 5.

Hope this was of some help.

Found that an unreliable company you are exchanging you tanks with, will charge you every three to five years for an "inspection" of your tanks. I use a new tank about every 6 or 7 months. Asked around and found other companies never charges for an " inspection " . Needless to say I switched.
