I need a new self-propelled walk behind lawn mower in the $300.00 to $400.00 range. Any advice available? Is Sears Craftsman any good? Can't afford a John Deere. I can buy two more good Farmall M's for that kind of money. Thanks for any help and advice.

I am a Lawnboy owner and I agree with Glenn as to how long a lawnboy will last. I have 2; 1978 Commercial 22 and a 1998 Gold Series 5HP, both are 2 stroke and I never have had to do a thing to them. I would also look into the Honda's lower priced mowers I think they are called Haromany Series as my dad has had Honda's for 15 years with no major problems but he has bought them from a Honda Dealer, NOT from any discount or chain store.

Look at a Lawn-Boy. You can get into a Gold Series for right at $400 or so ... it has the aluminum deck(no rust, worth $400 in its own right IMO), and it has the two-stroke engine that lasts forever as long as you mix the gas and oil correctly. Lawn-Boy also makes a line of less-expensive Silver Series mowers with a stamped steel deck and your choice of two-stroke or four-stroke engines.

We have a 1974 Lawn-Boy and a 1978 Lawn-Boy. Both have two-stroke engines ... they've never been opened up for repairs. Money well spent!

A Craftsman with the Briggs motor should be fine.

Here it is: I have tuned up a lot of mowers of all types! The Craftsman mower from Sears is probably going to last until you get tired of it, or you hit a root or a rock! They are well made, and start right up every time! The transmission is sturdy and holds up well. I don't work on or repair Lawn boy mowers! Oh, they work well for a while, but after several years of use, the ignition coil usually gives out, and its $40 or more to replace it + labor! The ones made back in the early 50s were the best. They didn't have much to go wrong, but the newer ones just don't cut it in my book! The Honda mowers work fine, but are over-priced! Later on, they seem to have trouble with gas leaking down into the crank-case, and it dilutes the oil to the point that the rings don't get enough lubrication, so they wear out too quickly! Sears Co. has Warehouse stores where you can get parts quickly. (Not the retail outlets, although they can order parts for you) Sears uses Tecumseh and Briggs engines. both are good engines. I've repaired Sears mowers-- tune-ups, etc, but haven't had to replace any engines, unless the owner hit a root or rock! From: Rusty Jones

I wouldn't touch any Sears self-propelled mower with a ten foot pole. I had two '80s models and they ate the transmissions. All the plastic parts broke, the wheels wore out fast, and they were overweight. The news ones use the same design as the old junkers I had. I'd get a Sears push mower, just not anything with complex parts that Sears supplies.

Lawn Boys are good mowers, but their quality has slipped since Toro bought them in 1989. The M series was a real disaster. I have a LB from 1965 that runs like new. Has all the original parts.

The best mowers now are Snapper, Honda, and Toro. JD, Husqvarna and a bunch of others are almost up there below the top three.

Thanks for all the help. Looks like Sears is a pretty good bet for a reasonable price.I'll have my wife decide which one she wants. heh-heh Thanks again.
