I have a 5 hp elect motor, 220 volt that I had been saving as a spare in case one of my others quit, well now I need it but somebody borrowed the capactors out of it. Theres no markings any where to even tell what brand of motor it is. How can I tell what size mf capacitors it takes? Thanks in advance

I just repaired a 5 hp Dayton and it had two start caps at 1068 mfd and 230 volts each.

The dry starting capacitor(s) or a wet running capacitor?

Steve's number are in low end of the correct mcfd range. A size larger will improve starting torque. Doubling or tripling the size of the run capacitor will reduce running current & voltage drop on long wire runs. Overload size will have to be reduced to maintain protection.

Check with any reputable motor rewind shop.. They'll know. Are the specification plate(s) still on the motor? They may tell.
