Someone broke into my truck and stole my tools. Many of them were Popular Mechanic Brand. I thought that they were good tools and would like to replace them. Walmart does not carry them anymore. Does anyone know who does? Or does anyone know of a PM addrress or phone number so I can contact the company? If so, let me know please and thanks for the help.

Check out the tools at Home Depot. The Husky tools are excellent quality and reasonably priced. Home Depot also has a great selection of screwdrivers in a wide variety of price/quality.

PM was the exclusive store brand of wal-mart. Benchtop is the store brand of K-mart and are of better quality than the PM's. I have several sets of sockets that are great but the wrenches are not that good. Task Force is the new Lowe's brand and they ain't worth squat either, wrenches or sockets. Kobalt are good tools but with Lowe's dropping the screw/nut drivers and getting no contact with Williams or Kobalt after many requests, I can only assume that these will be gone shortly as well.

I'm assuming you're like me and don't want the "best" quality tools just because of the theft loss, but need tools that suffice for the least amount of monetary investment. If you have a "cheap tool" store locally that carries MIT (Michigan Industrial Tool) brand, you should look at these. Imported just like the store brands and not the best quality or best looking but they work. Definitely won't get the use from them you will from top end tools like Wright or Snap-On but when you can get a whole set for $15 who really cares? Personally, I have a hard time taking a hammer to a snappy wrench on a stuck nut/bolt but won't hesitate to beat the snot out of an MIT wrench and not think twice about it. The sockets ain't that bad either, cheap and work, even had them hold up to some impact duty in a pinch. The ratchets leave a lot to be desired in the ratchet mechanism but I have yet to have one fail, even the 3/4" drive that repeatedly gets the torque multiplier pipe on the handle. The extentions are a differnt story, the 3/4" and 1" drive ones are ok but smaller than that and they are weak and will twist off easily, go with the impact extentions instead of the chrome ones.

Thanks Mark Kw. I appreciate your help. I have purchaced a socket set of Benchtop Pro from the Big K. But I have not found adequate replacements for some of my stolen tools. You are right, I do not want the "best", but I do want tools that will stand up to some abuse. I will look around for MIT Brand. Thanks for the tip.

If you look at the current Taiwan-sourced, Stanley-branded tools sold at Wal-Mart, they are mostly identical to the old PM tools except for the name. Obviously, Stanley was making the PM wrenches for WalMart (offshore). Stanley didn't make all PM tools (screwdrivers appeared to be Vermont-American), but the ratchets, sockets, etc. were Stanley.

So, if you liked the old tools, the Stanleys should be similar. I have had good luck with the PM tools that I own.

Not sure how good the PM/WalMart guarantee actually was, as I never had to test it, but I don't think the Stanley guarantee is worth squat. Having said that, they seem to be decent tools for the money, so if they meet your needs, who cares about the warranty? As you can attest, the tools are more likely to be stolen or lost than to be broken from occasional use.

My guess is the marketing agreement to use the PM name (owned by Hearst) by WalMart expired and wasn't renewed.

Thanks Bill, I appreciate you taking time to help. I have been hunting around and have purchased a few replacement tools (Stanley and Benchtop Pro). I'm having the most difficulty replacing the PM screwdriver set that I had. They came in a great variety pack and seemed to be able to withstand a beating without damage. The Stanley screwdrivers don't appeal to me. Do you know who carries Vermont American. I would like to check them out. Thanks again.

I believe that Popular Mechanics was exclusive to Walmart. The only ones that I have seen are what Walmart had left or some surplus items show up in surplus and flea markets.

In case anyone needs to get replacements for broken PM tools. The # is 1-800-245-7676. They do not sell the brand any more but they will still honor the lifetime warrentee.I hope that this will help some of you.
