Ok, not exactly tractor nor tool, but I suspect someone here knows about these things. Drove one today and it didn't "act" like I expected and just wondering if that's the way they are supposed to be or if there is something wrong with this one. What I mean 1. Press the forward "monopedal", go up a hill and then apply brakes part way up the hill, and then let up on the brake the lift rolls backwards like it's in neutral. Kinda tricky to resume going up the hill without rolling backward. Is this "normal" ?

2. At rest on level ground, in forward or reverse the lift "wants" to move..such that you have to brake it or apply emergency brake. In other words there is no neutral. Is this normal ?

What strikes me as the irony of the setup, if this is normal, is that you have neutral when you don't want it (i.e. on the hill) and then don't have neutral when you do want it (at rest on level pavement).

For the record, this Hyster is a late model with low hours and appears in great condition, so my feeling is, this is just the way a Monotrol probably is meant to be, but it seems so counterintuitive that I'm wondering what the supposed advantage is of the system (other than the obvious free left hand)

D Thomas there is a switch under the floorboards that is actuated when you step on the pedal that determines direction of travel. rock the pedal with your hand from forward to reverse (key off) and see if you can hear it click. you need to test it with an ohmeter to see if it is working electricaly. If that isn't the problem it most likely is in the drive card. Do not attempt to adjust the potentiometers on the drive. call a service person and let them do it.

Not knowing the model and serial numbers of the unit you have, I can't say for sure, but your lift sounds like it is okay. If you want neutral, apply the park brake. If the "inching/brake" pedal is adjusted properly, the first part of the pedal travel dumps the pressure from the clutch packs and final depression of the pedal applies the hydraulic service brakes. This is so you do not end up with a "power on/brake on" situation. It is not healthy to generate all that heat in the clutch packs in the transmission. The free left hand that you refered allows you to never have to remove your hand from the steering wheel to change directions or speeds. In case this sounds like a commerical, I apoligize. I have worked for HYSTER Company and dealers for 25+ years and an a big fan of the monotrol.

d thomas,

I have one,i think it's been modified,maybe
for the better, the line from brake sys has been unhooked and capped so that brake no longer puts trans in neutral. a switch has been to the dash to put trans in neutral. never ran one that was properly plumbed, but this works well.

Been years and years... like 30. What I remember most is that it wasn't intuitive to me either. I cussed the monotrol and got on one of the manual transmission lifts whenever I could. The guys who drove them every day did fine with them.

Seems like what you experienced was about right...

Go forward or backwards, step on the brake firmly and you get neutral. Then you go forward or backwards again with the pedal.
