From a commercial carpenter and farmer buy AMERICAN !!! Any of the big names are good ,we use Porter Cable and the abuse we put them through pretty much says it all . But whatever you buy , use only Porter Cable cut off blades , they're thinner and hold up well in extremes , DeWalt are to thick and take too much of your saws power to cut the extra material.

I bought one of the cheapo chinese chop saws from the travelling chinese junk tool sales (Homier), it lasted about 12 cuts before the motor burned out. I decided I will buy American and bought a Dewalt, turns out it's made in China too!!!! Hasn't burned out yet though.

I bought one of those cheap brands last year and it had done ok until Sunday when I was cutting up an old swing set to use the pipe. The motor started smoking and it had me wondering just how much longer I would have this saw and that if I would have invested just twice as much I would have a nice dewalt.

Don't buy a Dewalt DW871 unless you want to replace it every two months. Every one of the last 4 we have purchased has had an armature failure. We send them back to dewalt and wait for a few months to get it back. They are garbage. We have a structural steel business and need a reliable chop saw. Does anyone know anything about the quality of metabo?

A Chop saw for cuttin' metal? Then do yourself a real favor and 4get the abrasive saws and get a DeWalt MultiSaw! I think Milwaukee & others may make them now. Anyway, they use a carbide saw blade & cut metal like it's wood! More expensive, but they sure are worth it!

If it's wood you want to cut then I don't have a clue!

Best advice: Spend the $$$ and get a name brand saw with nice options. I have a Dewalt, and I love it. Before I bought it, I looked at a few cheaper models, but I am glad that I went with the Dewalt. As the other posts below mention, just pick one from Dewalt, Makita, Porter Cable, etc.

I like Dewalt, I have one that I have used heavily for 3 years around the farm and it is still running strong. My neighbor has a Makita and maybe I am just used to mine but I like mine 10x more. I have never used a cheap one but ones I have looked over do not look like they would hold up to the way I use them. If you are cutting thinner steel maybe they would be OK. For 3/4 iron, drill stem, sucker rod, I would say go for a top name. You get what you pay for. Good Luck.

I looked at and compared about 6 or 7 different brands. I purchased the Ryobi. Had the same amp motor, turned the same rpm was a very comparable unit except it had a cast iron base. I am very pleased with it. Have used approx. 25 disc's through it and still going strong.

Pete , Sounds like you and I have the same brand of chop saw,"Ryobi". I like mine. It's been a very good saw. I've used many other brands like Milwauke , Makita , Porter cable , and Dewalt. When I say use them , I'm talking about industrial use. The company also had BIG chop saws. I'm only talking about the 14" ones. Makita & porter cable: Kind of a cheap saw. Milwauke was OK. Dewalt was Ok. Dewalt had a more comfortable handle than milwauke. I didn't like the pressed steel base on the dewalt. Dewalt "malti saw" is nice. But your talking a $100.00 bill for blade.

I have the Dewalt, I bought it from Harbor freight. I shopped around and found it to be the best value fpr the money. I paid around 130.00$.
It hasnt failed me yet. I have cut 3/4 x 6" plate.
With no problems.

I had an el cheapo, which was okay. I just bought a DeWalt, and it has better features and is a lot easier to use. It is a better value, even if you have to pay twice as much.

First, TURN OFF YOUR CAPS LOCK.

The cheapie $70 import saws are actually a pretty good value for the time they give you. That's what I'd get for home use. As far as quality saws, I've heard good things about the DeWalt and Makita models. Some people I've talked to said the Milwaukee spun too fast and would tend to harden the work.

In many internet discussion groups, using all caps is considered SHOUTING and is used to convey added meaning. Use all caps all the time and people will let you know about it. Sometimes not very gently either.

Here at YT ? Well, yeah, what the heck, I guess we know what he means and that he's not 'yelling'.

At this point I am pretty much convinced that Makita is junk, just like you said about them spinning so fast, their griders do to, then they overheat then the bearings fail and then the case melts, then it is junk. maybe not all is that way but it seems so. You can't go wrong with Milwaukee or Porter Cable, these are your best brands available with Dewalt behind but ahead of Makita, then after that its el cheapo. If I were to buy one today it would be Milwaukee, there stuff is proven and they will back it up, great company and great product. I get newletters from them sometimes and once they had the list of tests for their tools, it was impressive.

I can't go along with the idea that the Makita
chop saws are junk. Maybe if you buy the cheaper
models that could be true. I own the 16" gear
reduced model that only turns about half the speed
of most 12 and 14" models and has twice the power of most. With the larger cutting disc it will chop
through bigger material. The only draw back is
it cost me around $200.00 almost fifteen years
ago, sure they are more expensive now. It has hundreds and hundreds of hours on it with no
problems.

I can't comment on their current abrasive saw models, but like "shoe" said, the older ones were tough. I worked for a place that had one that we routinely misused and overloaded. It would sometimes get so hot it smoked. I would blow a little compressed air through the cooling vents and keep going. It survived this abuse for the entire 3 1/2 years I worked there.

Based on the various Makita tools I have used, they are definitely not the best you can buy. But for what they cost they are a good value...Al English

I bought a real chop saw a year ago, bought the Ridgid dry cut 614 saw, uses a carbide tipped 14" blade. It actually cuts thru the metal not grind it's way thru. Expensive? yea it was almost five hundred, and the blades cost over a hundred, but it gives a smooth straight cut, american made and a real tool, has 15 amp motor and built to last.
