I recently bought an older 2HP PAR air compressor with a 2-stage Westinghouse pump on it. The motor is 3-phase and I'm looking to replace it with a 3HP single phase that I bid on at E-bay. After bidding however, I noticed that the 3HP that I bid on turns at 3550 rpm while the other one only spins at 1750 rpm. Can I go with a smaller pulley, one half the size that it uses now and be okay, or should I try and retract my bid before it's too late? HAHA! Thanks,,,Steve.

Steve, As I remember the formula for compressor rpm is: Compressor rpm is equal to motor rpm times motor pulley diameter divided by compressor pulley diameter. Someone jump in and correct me if I am off track here. Terry

that motor may work if you can get small enough pulley for it. grainger catalog will have formula for figuring this out.

the 3400rpm motors are referred to as
"Super 5's", meaning they come close to a 5HP
output, but speeding everything up.

Real 5 hp systems turn circa 1700 RPM,
are quieter, and last longer too!

I guess, to use a 3500rpm motor, where a
1700 was, you'd need x2 the original pulley
size...

I have an o-o-o-o-o-ld electric motor powered air-compressor with a motor from Wagner Electric Corp of St. Louis. When I installed a pressure switch, I (somehow) failed to re-connect the wires correctly. It's a 110/220 motor with four wires. Of course they're not color coded, (did I mention it was old...) Anyway, I took it to a motor shop 30 miles away, they checked for resistance and continuity between all the wires and decided to wire it in series, (two leads twisted together, and the other two were the A/C leads). It fired up and ran the right direction and they sent me home. When I fired it up, it only developed about 20psi before it started to slow, (they hadn't given it a chance to build any pressure at their shop). Upon calling them back, it was suggested I purchase something newer. It worked great before, and I believe it just needs to be wired properly. Can you, or do you know of someone who can help? It's a 65W, 110V 5.2Amp or 220V 2.6Amp, (I need 110). Thanks

Wayne

You can get the same HP rating in both R.P.M.s in many HP ranges. I.E. 3HP,1750rpm. 3HP,3450rpm. Use 1/2 the diameter of the old pulley,however,start-up may be a little harder on the higher RPM motor unless you have an unloader valve on the compressor. good luck.
