I was wondering how hard it would to be to build a small truck/tractor like the john deere gator with a truck tranny and a small engine. My Grandpa gave me a picture of one out of the " Farm show" magazine, I thought it would be neat to have to to drive around the farm and to haul light loads.

Have to agree with the others. Get an old Datsun/Nissan/Toyota. Had a 77 Datson that ran great when I sold it w/ 127,000 miles, ('cept my feet kept falling through the floor board). My '86 Toyota has a rotten bed (as they all do) but it just keeps running. +140,000 miles and I use it for running around town, hauling, etc. Those 22R engines are the best.

Man, get yourself any year, any condition, (but running) datsun or nissan pickup for under a thousand $, and I promise, you can beat it to h---. those things won't die. I tried to kill my last $800 (street legal, registered,etc.)'86 nissan, and just gave up. I sold it 2 weeks ago for $1600, and the guy got a deal.

There are many small trucks available, and for the cost, make excellent farm trucks. I just looked at a 88 Mitsubishi(Dodge Ram) 4x4, with 140k on it asking price of $800 dollars. Leaf spring rear, runs excellent. If you had cover for it, you could cut the roof off and make a convertible out of it. There are so many of these mini trucks, with rusted frames out there, the price sure makes them worth it. This Mitsubishi has an excellent frame and is even registered. Gators are nice but pricey.

I use my old 73 Datsun truck just like you describe. Of course, the bed doesn't dump, but that could be done if I wanted to spend the money. I saw a kit to make a dump bed from a regular pickup recently. Just hinge the bed at the rear and put a hydraulic piston setup about middle of the bed frame. Pretty simple, except for the price.

I always wanted an army mule (about 4' x 8' flat platform with drivers seat added) still want one by the way. i built something similiar from a subura running gear and an 8 hp BS engine. it was ok but since the running gear took so much hp, it was too slow for most things around farm. i should have invested in about 18 hp engine. i just got a gator, i try hard not to think about how much i paid for it. i keep wondering if a couple of industrius people could not get together and build gator like vehicals for about half what a gator cost
