Came across a Sanborn Magna Force 7.5hp,80? gal upright. Its been sitting indoors on a pallet for nearly 2yrs at a local small business.According to a worker there it "blew a piston" and as it was a few yrs old management just had a new unit installed that day and shoved the old one into the corner.Tank is "dry",no outward sign of damage, just a good coat of dust.Would this beast be worth dragging home if obtained for little or nothing?I have rebuilt several smaller units over the years but....?????

I agree with everything that's been said so far. Take it apart & see what's wrong. IF You need a compressor pump, check the yellow pages under Compressed air or industrial Equip. for a local air compressor company. There should be several in any larger community. Also wouldn't hurt to ask at the local auto parts store or any company that uses a LOT of compressed air. They could recommend some place to check for a used or reconditioned compressor pump.

I have a Sanborn, Has been a headache ever since I got it. Any less mechanically minded would have trashed it long ago. Sanborn is no more, having been acquired by Coleman. Recently I had another failure in the head/valve assembly on mine. Was told by Coleman that mine is obsolete, no parts available. You should check with them as to availability of parts before you drag that piece of junk home.

Hi Joe,

I'm not a compressor guru, but here's my sage advice anyway:

Check the price for a new and/or reconditioned pump. That way you know where you stand even if the pump turns out to be junk. My guess is that if you can get it cheap enough it's worth fixing. Good luck. Go in peace Mr. Joe...Swami Al English

Not a guru by far but my guess would be less of a "blown" piston but more of a wiped cylinder from overheat and or lack of oil. Second guess would be a bearing, rod or crank failure. Sometime you get lucky and one of the valves just stick and cause the same pressure in the crankcase symptom as a blown piston. Won't know till you look.

I've never done one myself but I have seen a guy do several of these hardware store compressors over boring the cylinder and then using bigger size pistons from 2 stroke engines. Some of these have cast iron sleeves that can be replaced but I have no idea as to how much the parts costs would be.

I'd say, if you can get it for free, it'd be worth hauling home and ripping down to see what's what with it. At worst case, you can just get a new pump for considerably less than a whole unit.

yep, if its free, and the tank and motor are good, then get a compressor (pump) from one of the discount tool catalogues like northwestern, etc. and it would be cheaper than a new one. thats what I'd do...just a thought
