Thinking about buying one out of the Northern Tool Catalogue, item # 331705-F744. Wondering if anyone has experience with them and can enlighten me on their pros and cons.

Don't waste your money, I bought one (same model number). I installed it 1,000 feet away from the house and it didn't work, had to move it about 300 feet from the house to get it to work at all. When first installed it worked okay, 1 year later it false alarms and doesn't work most of the time when vehicles drive by. Too bad I burned the box, I would send the thing back.

I don't know what N/T sells but I have one from Link I have an older model and they now sell a better one. It's wireless, just minutes to install and the 9v battery lasts 'forever'.Mine detects autos and people and does give some false alarms and for some reason does not detect every entry. Keep in mind mine is an older unit and proper installation is very important. I also have a second buzzer in my shop. Once you have a system like this, it would be hard to be without one. The dog seems to hear it go off before I do and barks immediately.

I didn't go that way. Anything battery powered I try to avoid. Northern says people and animals won't set it off. That eliminates infrared. They didn't say what it's sensing. Price is attractive.

The sensor I used required a shallow trench for the wire. Sensor was buried in the center of the gravel drive (or alongside a paved one). This thing senses changes in the earth's magnetic force, I think, due to moving steel nearby. Anyway, even during the last two summers' electric storms we had no false alarms.

It's connected to a processor in my shop that uses X-10 hardware to send a signal to our house. Sensor is 1200' from the house. Works great. First time I tried it to adjust sensitivity, my steel-toed boots set it off. Now it's set for a slow-moving small tractor. Requires a good ground to work correctly.

This was after two burglary attempts on my shop on two consecutive nights. I also put in an alarm system using the same X-10 transmitter. Sleeping much better now.

That sounds like a much better system. Can you give me some information so that I can research price and availability?

Had to look it up. It's a Cartell Driveway Sensor from Preferred Technologies Group in Lancaster, Pa. 800-223-4743 They also have great tech help. I was asking if they had a way to send the signal to the house and they told me to use the X-10 hardware. You buy the sensor attached to the correct length wire for your application (they don't want you to make any connections). Mine was one of the shorter lengths. Two sensors are needed if you want to know which way the vehicle is going.

Both were available from the supplier who sold me the burglar alarm. Lots of X-10 is also on Ebay. If you need that, email me for the part numbers. I've replaced one X-10 sending unit after a lightning strike but that's the only problem I've had. Does not detect people (or deer) and, very important to me, NO false alarms.

I installed one for a client house and he's had the same experience, except for the X-10 replacement. Gonna cost you a little more than that $90 but I sure don't need unnecessary 3AM trips with a shotgun down to my shop. And I'm not saying anything against the Northern sensor as I don't know what it is. Most of the wireless are infrared sensors.
