I was just wondering if any of the farmers here have used or still use fanning mills to clean there own bin run seed.

A neighbour and I went to many farm auctions last year to find a machine. It ended up we found one right next door. It is all wood and in great shape it has to be 75 to 100 years old. It is quite fancy looking lots of pinstriping. It had been run by a hand crank ( we mounted an electic motor and pulleys). It had a pile of different screens for various seed. The big difference with this machine is that the shoe shakes from side to side not in the same direction as the grain flow.

We used it last fall to clean winter wheat, it worked great. It ran about 140 bushels per hour. We ran soybeans this spring and ran from 80 to about 115 bushels per hour.

We paid $150 Cdn for the machine and put in about 6 bucks in repair (had add some bushings). At 90cents per bushel to have custom cleaning done , it paid for itself in the 1st hour we had it.

I just found its twin(with all the screens) itwillneed about $10 in repairs to get the ole girl fired up. This one cost us $50 and he threw in an old wooden spoked wagon on the deal. I sold the wagon to an antique/landscape fella. Net cost was a 50 dollar profit.

It is hard to make out the name on the sheetmetal but it appear to be called a Chatham ---seed cleaner , Made in Chatham Ontario.

I have a Chatham fanning mill at my place. It was manufactured by Manson Campbell and Sons Co.It says the company is based out of Detroit Michigan. I am in the mode of rebuilding it and I would like to know what you think it is worth.

I have the one my grandfather had. It is a Clipper brand, the shoe shakes the same direction as the grain flow. We used every year execpt the last few. I have the hand cranks and I'm glad I never got to use them.

The hand crank would have been real fun to use if any number of bushels had to be cleaned. You would get some good sized arms in a hurry.
