I am about to purchase my first power washer. I would like something with enough power to remove grease and paint flakes from a tractor that I plan to restore plus tackle all the other chores around a small place. This will be my first restoration project. Any help will be appreciated.

If you can afford it go with a heated unit like Hotsy. There expensive but great for removing grease. If you want to strip grease with cold water I would look at about 3000 psi. Of course your now looking at increased cost of unit. If your going to wash down your deck or ready a wood building to paint go with a high pressure. If your just going to wash vehicles and tinker a 2000 to 2400 will work ok. Presoak your greasy items with degreaser or oven off. That will help. Most washers now are gas powered. I like Honda engines. Hard to find an electric with lots of psi.

Another little item that will help the pressure is a turbo tip. It shoots out a solid stream and swirls it around. It'll take grease and paint plum off. Get a good one and it should be sized to the output of the machine you select along with all the other tips you get with the machine you choose. Remember you get what you pay for. Here is a link for a place that sells all kind of washers.

I'd just like to say thanks to all who took the time to provide a novice some advice. Also thanks for the links. It makes comparing the various models a lot easier.

Bigger is better. Buy as big as you can afford. Mine is 3500gpm, 4 gal. per min. It has a 13hp engine. It's B.S. engine. I would recommend Honda engine. I also have a sand blast attachment for it . It will take grease and paint off of anything. Buy the biggest and best you can you won't be sorry. Jerry in California

i have read what the others have said, but i have had them type also, an i have now a steamer. if a person is goin to spend the money buy the biggest an best you can buy. dont buy a no name brand. buy a good unit.
the one i have is adf made in humbolt ia. it is a good unit an they are pretty reasonable priced. it a high pressure 2500 psi an 5 gallons per minute at 220 degrees. it will take the grease an the paint off of anything. ounce you have a steamer you will not want anything else. they have 110 units an 220 units. i had a hotsy but when i went to get a new one they wanted about twice for the same unit. you are paying more for the name then the unit. they are good units dont get me wrong but high priced

For the budget concious: Home Depot, Coleman, 3.5 gallon @3500psi-$500.

Personally to increase pump life I NEVER run anything other than water through my unit. I spray on whatever with a hand spray pump bottle then power wash it off.

I researched this topic for a couple of years. Landa is the best, no doubt. Horribly expensive, but built like a tank and parts, though pricey, are no problem. Dealer service is good. I bought an el cheapo at Home Depot, with a Briggs Intek engine, which I prefer over a Honda. Used it six times and the head on the General plastic piston "advanced design" pump broke!! Had the pump replaced with an AR 2500 psi, 3.5 gallon per minute pump and it goes like a house afire!! The new pump cost $400, but considering all my costs and the amount of use it gets, this was the least expensive way to go. The post about the turbo tip is a good one. I use one and it takes off anything. Steam is better, but my application prohibits using steam. All the best.....Greg

Go to NorthernTool.com and browse around their selection. Ask them for a master catalog, it makes a good wish book. IMHO stuff here.

Minimal machine, about 5.5 hp, you'll get about 3GPM at 2,000 psi. Even at that level, you'll wonder how you ever got by without one. Plan on about $400 for that caliber of machine.

Next step up, you go to 3GPM/3,000 PSI washers. You'll be 'getting serious' and pretty much be be 'loaded for bear'.

That's about an 8hp engine. On the Northern site, that caliber of machine starts at about $600 for a Tecumseh Engine, stepping up to a Honda Engine goes to $800.

Next step up goes to 4 GPM. which is a pretty serious machine. Engines go to the 10 hp + range for those machines. Plan on $900 or so.

Top of the line are Honda industrial engines mated with CAT pumps. You jump up to the $1,000 level to go there.

Be sure to read the safety instructions. Any of these machines will blow water right through your skin which usually results in massive tissue damage often followed by amputation.

I agree with bbott above. Have a 3gpm, 2200psi unit powered by a 5.5hp Honda - great little unit.
Wouldn't recommend a smaller one if you're serious about the jobs you mention.
