My Honda 3000 watt was running a 1/2 hp pump and the pump motor started smoking and clicking after a minute. I plugged it into a wall plug and it was fine. I turned the voltage of the gen from 118.9 to 120.5, and the pump ran fine.
Is there a problem with the motor, or is this ok? Also, I know (watts=volts X amps) so why do some gen sets say kva and others kw?

Hi Max, Does your genset bog down when the motor starts? The slight change in voltage setting shouldn't make that much difference. I would check the pump for a winding that looks burnt.

Kva times the power factor equals true power. Loads like a motor cause the current to lag the voltage. In this case, multipling voltage times amps gives a too high answer. I measured the PF on a appliance, and it was about .85. I think sone generators are rated in kva to allow for inductive loads.
