Gave my 2 cents worth in a post a few pages down about StandBy generators. Mentioned I went with a 16 horse Briggs & Stratton Vangard engine. Mentioned I knew that Briggs wasn't noted for really long life. Thought I may counteract that in the future by converting to propane as it will dramatically increase any engines life & it's SOOOOO much easier to store/not have to worry about keeping it fresh. Seems to be some interest out there in that. All I know about the subject is I need to find a supply house, buy the conversion & read the instructions.... I and others are curious about whats really involved in the conversion such as timing change/how hard it actually is for a decent handyman/will it derate the engine horsepower/whats a good source for getting the conversion kit. Any one out there familiar with this type of venture/got any helpful input?

I looked into doing the same thing. Found some good information at the site below. Ended up getting a generator with a propane kit already built in, so I never tried it. Looks simple enough, judging by the kit installed on my rig.

Propane will derate the output by 10%, natural gas by 20%. You shouldn't have to mess with the timing, as mine will go from gasoline to gas without any changes.

Good luck.

Think the rule of thumb for derating from gasoline horsepower is about 10% less for propane and about 20% less for natural gas.

Check with a local propane supplier. The one where I used to live sold and installed these conversion kits. Like the other post type IMPCO in and search.

I have a propane powered generator that I took out of a motorhome, it is a brigs with a dual fuel conversion, love it, I have never run it on gas, it just works to good on propane. I have 16 vehicles that run on propane, I change the oil every 4-5 years, I have some that havent had new spark plugs in 20 ..It's the only way to go, and no fuel tax!!! If you need a place for conversions , type in IMPCO -hit search. Everything you need is there. If I can be of any assistance, feel free to ask..Greg
