Break-away breaks

I have a trailer with a gel-cell battery for the break away breakes. It seems to hold it's charge, it's 4 years old and I've never done anything to it. I'm thing of hooking the tail light lead to the battery, with a diode to prevent a back feed.
I'm thinking that this will maintain the battery.
Looking for comments, good-bad.
Thanks,
Dusty

Just hooked up a breakaway system. The max charge rate on a gel cell batery used on trailers is 1.2 amps. You will need a resistor in line with the diode to limit the current to the battey.
