Just read the other response, dont bother with the 6011 root pass,v it and use 7018 all the way,but only if you can cut it with a torch.6011 might be fine for steel, but its not going to do any good in cast steel, and in a case like this you want all the strength you can get.Heat it with a torch some first, but not red.I did this before and it worked fine, you have to weld, peen, weld, peen untill you get done.It might crack as it cools. If it does try and change what you are doing, like let it cool a little before you weld again,or dont weld as far and stop.7018 is not a real deep penetrating rod,and if you v it with a torch you need to grind all the slag off before you weld on it,and weld so as to penetrate all the way through, and weld it flat if you can.It doesnt hurt to weld run off tabs on the end of the v either and start your weld on the tab, weld all the way across onto the other tab, when you get done cut them off with a torch, that will also help to keep the weld hot longer.

Groove it out good and get a 6010 or 6011 root pass into it. Cover pass with 7018 AC rods and peen between passes for stress relief.
