just now i was cleaning up the engine compartment in my truck (89 chevy 3/4 ton) and I took off the air cleaner cover and there was about 3-4 handfulls of corn! there was corn all over in the system before the filter the filter and anything inside is fine but i would like to know of anyway to stop this what animal might be doing this and how to kill it i think it was mice and i will be settiing out rat poison. any help would be appreciated. i know that when you live in the country youre bound to have some stuff on the intake from animals but i would have never thought it would be in there.

To solve this problem I put 1/4 hardware screene over air intake, doesn't restrict it as much as window screene and is tougher.

My 2 cents worth... Based on no pets/no problem-

Rodents ( and PETS!!!) love the sweet smell/taste of radiator coolant anti-freeze. I leave some all around the shop in shallow paint can covers that I push under low stuff/harborage type areas. My dogs don't fit under under the low suff to get at it, I don't like/own cats/hence I have the rodent problem & it works for me. I use to salt my tool sheds with so much mothballs you could smell them at 50 paces on a still day & I still had mice. No more.....

Had great luck with the moth balls myself, mice hate the smell, they won't even enter an old car or cab with moth balls in it. Can you put some window screen over the air inlet of the cleaner? I see dog food inside the air boxes of newer vehicles all the time, have cleaned dog food out of heater boxes on relatively new cars, the heater fan couldn't even turn. check around the carburetor too, as mice love to pack things on the top the intake manifold, seen a few things go up in smoke from this habit of theirs. JDguy get yourself some "Onebite", by Barrs, it comes in a brick form and you break it up into smaller bars and distribute around the barn, garrage, whatever, you could even put a piece in the air cleaner in your truck, this stuff wont hurt pets just critters in the rodent family.
Works good cause I ocasionally get barn rats and once I spread some of that around I dont see them again for about six months.
Good luck Jim K

Had same problem with an auto onetime, only acorns. A chipmunk...was culprit.

I have had big problems with the trucks that I haul corn, and potatoes at harvest and then park for the year. I had a leaky rad. and had drained it for the winter, goofed and left the cap off and a chipmunk filled it with corn. Killed one mouse when it made a nest on the distributer cap, went to fire it up and it keept misfireing, I opened the hood and found the critter still twitching. Now I put mouth balls all over and it looks like it works. Put the poison away from the machine filled with mouth balls. You don't want to find rotting dead thing some place where you can't get it out! (don't ask how I know)
