I have an Lincoln SP 130T 230v (single phase) mig welder wich was working fine until I plugged it into 440v three phase plug and the smoke started rolling out. I know a little about electricity and was wanting to know where to start looking for troubleshooting (or a new welder?). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Don't plug it in yet; you need to find the part(s) that let the smoke out. I looked at the drawing of my Hobert to see what might happen if I put 440v in it. If I didn't squeze the trigger, only a small fuse should blow.

You need a drawing of the circuits. I would do a visual check for burned components. If you can see the windings on the main transformer, are they shiny or dark(burnt).

I need a drawing to go much farther; but it shouldn't be too dificult to trouble shoot. May just be a minor part that went. A small resistor can let out a lot of smoke.

You can try pluging it back into 230v power and try to weld with it, it may work, but I think that you might as well start looking for a new unit. Good luck Jim K
