I've been asked to repair a very old silage cutter with a broken mounting bracket. I have some 3/32 lincon soft weld 55% Ni rod for gear teeth and cams. Would this be better than 99% Ni rod, or do I need to buy some of that. Would pre heating be necessary. Any suggestions welcome.

When welding cast iron you should always preheat it. Nickel 55 is stronger than Nickel 99. Slow cooling is necessary. Cover with sand or wrap with a high heat resistant material. Cast iron can build up stresses from cooling too fast and then you have to weld it again.

I'm not sure about the rods, personaly I usually
use 9018's they seem to do a good job for me, but I'm not a real welder. As for heating, if you can heat the cast until its soft and weld while you are still heating ( a second set of hands is very helpful)this will be like welding jello and allow the weld to cool VERY slowly. This will make the weld strong as new. Hope this helps and good luck . Kraig
