Yep water catches sparks and smoke. How far from the piece of work you are cutting? The air curtain will come on and blow the whole time you are cutting. The torch head will move into position and blow the water out of the way then fire and cut till it is done if you are making one long cut. How big is the table you have. The one I worked on was about 15 x 50 feet had two seperate water tables so you could get parts off while it was cutting the other pieces.

Scott - Thanks for your help on the water table idea. My cutting table is only a little over 4'X4' - just a baby by what your used to seeing. I'm going to use a 24" fan to blow the smoke out an open garage door. So I don't have a "industrial" kind of setup, but I want to keep the metal dust & sparks as low as I can.

Thanks DumOleBob

I worked for a place that made truck bodies and dump trailers with a large plasma cutter by ESAB was all computer controlled. The water was just enough to cover the metal If there was too much water the air that came on around the torch would not keep the water from the cut If not enough it would smoke up the place. I was told the water was used to keep the building more free of smoke.
They cut some small parts with no water cause the operator was using the joystick to cut out some kind of show off parts. Stunk up the place quick.
What kind of cutter do ya have?

I'm using a Hypermax 900 & a PlasmaCam CNC Cutting outfit. It sound like maybe 1/4" of water is all that is needed. On the other hand, if the water is too close the air from the Plasma cutter will blow it right out of the tray? I assume the water is intended to catch the "sparks" & maybe some of the smoke.
