Removal of an old barn

I have an old barn on one of our farms. 1901 sticks in my mind as the build date. It is new enough that the beams are sawed instead of hand cut, but they are still pinned together. the south end wall was never tied into the barn real well and the reacent 60mph winds have pulled it free. The barn still has a roof. I hate to think of calling the fire co. for a drill (what happens to most out of date farm buildings, 2 with in sight of this barn). I wonder about selling the wood but who will take it down? Most of the disassemblers want hand cut beams. This site has some sharp folks who would know. Is there anyone who will take her down? Is it worth it? Hate to see all that wood go to waste.

don't know where you are located, but around here (n ia) old buildings are advertised something like: free lumber if u take down & remove from premises. one thing to remember is make sure whoever takes it down has insurance to cover themselves and anybody helping them. if not, it could cost you a pretty penny if somebody gets hurt (even a nail hole in the foot that gets septic). my 2 cents.

I am looking for an old barn to remove and rebuild/restore on my property in eastern Washington state. There must be other old fools out there looking for the same. This looks like a good place to start getting the word out.

Don't know what part of the country you're from, but if you have a local Amish community, they're often interested in tearing down old buildings for salvage... If you have any of these folks around contact them, and see what you can work out.

Around here they usually wait until the barn collapses to avoid having to buy a permit. Then the chainsaws and crowbars come out and the good long beams are sold. The rest usually yields a tractor shed with a good supply of firewood for heating it!

I'm not interested but I know guys who might be. Where? Lots of call for recycled beams and posts, including sawn ones, around here. What species? We also have a nationally know recycler nearby who'd be interested almost anywhere in the world if they find the right type of wood and there's enough to warrant shipping for resawing. They get $7-25/ft for their products. Very successful. Chestnut, for instance, really gets their attention. Don't count on funding a new retirement plan though. Lot of work involved.

The barn is in western New York. Guess I should have mentioned that. Vince
