Where can I buy a hydraulic ram for an engine hoist. I want to make the rest and save a little money.

Harbor Freight, auto parts store,Northern Hydraulics, but if you have a Sams club card,or even if you dont, you could buy one from a Sams club really reasonable, and for just a little more you can buy one that folds up.

Check the larger flea markets, theres always someone selling the foreign line of tools and they either carry them or can get you one. They come in 3 or 8 ton sizes. I bought a 3 ton model for $50 in 1994 and it works just fine. No need for the 8 ton model (too slow) unless you're lifting big diesel engines. I gave a dollar apiece for the casters and scrounged the square tubing at the local boneyard along with the swivel hook from an electric chain hoist. (all free) I do a little welding for him occasionally. So, I got a little work, $54 and a quart of Massey Ferguson red paint invested in it. Lifted a 1285 lb. Harrison M300 lathe with it. Yes, I know not everyone is that fortunate but maybe it'll head you in a better direction. Thats what we're all about. L8R....Fred OH

And don't forget that you'll need some sort of hand pump for your system.

Northern sells those too.

You could find one you like on an existing hoist and order just the ram as a "repair" part.

Hi Lucas,

I made such a hoist using a 2 inch bore by 24 inch stroke cylinder available at Northern Tool. See link below for cylinders.
