I maintain a 1949 Model D road grader and am in need of power steering.(I am older than the grader by quite a bit.) Does anyone know about the interchability of power steering
units among tractors and other equipment. The model I have seen has its own hydraulic pump and the assist unit mounts on the steering shaft near the windshield.

Power steering is power steering the challenge is to adept the mountings. There are assist units and there are hydrostatic units. Hydrostatic cuts the mechanical shaft link between steering wheel and wheels and is usually easier to steer with no effort. Assist units are usually mounted like you say but also can be a hydraulic cylinder mounted on the tie rod and an actuator on the steering shaft. Assit units can be from a little help to a lot of help.
There are a lot of parts that can be salvaged from combines, tractors, cars, trucks etc. that can be used to add on to things with out power steering. Good luck.
